Georgia’s Supreme Council Sets New Elections: A Call to Restore Democracy and Overcome the Crisis

by marusia

On 15 November 2025, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia took a decisive step toward overcoming the country’s prolonged political crisis.

In response to the international community’s refusal to recognise the 2024–2025 elections held by the de facto authorities, the Council declared that new parliamentary and local self-government elections will take place on 9 April 2026.

This move comes at a critical moment. Georgia is navigating a dangerous legitimacy vacuum, where institutions are weakened and public trust has eroded. By invoking its constitutional authority granted under Articles 86 and 104 of the Transitional Constitution, the Supreme Council has assumed responsibility for stabilizing the political landscape and restoring democratic rule.

The resolution outlines a clear roadmap for rebuilding the electoral process. The Council has initiated nationwide consultations with political forces, signalling the start of a broad effort to renew the electoral framework. Key reforms include modernising election laws, strengthening transparency mechanisms and restructuring the Central Election Commission on a parity basis. These steps aim to guarantee genuine political competition and prevent further manipulation of the voting system.

But the Council emphasizes that domestic efforts alone are not enough. To ensure that the upcoming elections are recognised as legitimate, Georgia calls on democratic nations, international observers and partner institutions to stand with the country at this pivotal time. External support — through monitoring missions, technical guidance and diplomatic backing — is essential to building public confidence and ensuring that the 2026 elections reflect the true will of the Georgian people.

Choosing 9 April as the election date is symbolic. It is a day deeply rooted in Georgia’s struggle for independence and national dignity. By placing the vote on this historic date, the Supreme Council sends a message: Georgia is ready to reclaim its democratic path and move beyond the crisis.

Today, the country faces a choice. Either remain in a state of uncertainty, or unite around a renewed democratic process. The Supreme Council urges all political actors, civil society, and international partners to actively participate in preparing for free, fair and transparent elections. Georgia stands at the threshold of change — and this moment demands engagement, vigilance and collective responsibility.

If these efforts succeed, the 2026 elections may become a turning point, restoring trust in institutions and reaffirming Georgia’s commitment to democratic values.
